New Crop of Young Leaders Kick-off Toronto Sport Leadership Program

Article written by Harshavi Patel

The Philpott Leadership Program is BACK IN ACTION for the 2022-2023 season!  This free program provides participants aged 16-24, and living in priority neighborhoods of Toronto, with the skills and training needed to become Tennis Canada certified tennis instructors.

Congratulations to the 20 new program participants who will complete the robust on-and-off court learning and training to prepare  for  Tennis Canada certification and employment in the Philpott tennis programs.

In the Toronto Sport Leadership Program (TSLP), participants will hone their tennis skills, learn the fundamentals of coaching, build relationships with their peers, and become our future excellent Philpott instructors. They are also provided with many opportunities to attend workshops on childcare, first aid, and real-life skills which they can apply both on and off the court.

After recently completing tryouts for this program, the team is now complete. This year we have 20 new members joining the Leadership Program fully funded by Philpott Children’s Tennis. In this program, they will have the opportunity to develop and expand on both their tennis and coaching abilities. Through weekly practices at one of our partner locations, L’amoureux Tennis Club, they will be working towards their Level 1 certification and then coaching with Philpott this summer.

“All of our programs work together, from our learn to play to our coaching development pathway, but I love the Leadership program because this is where we take the support for the kids to a different level.  It’s so customized and so positive, and we get to know the kids and see their growth.  We see them get coaching opportunities where they can work and make money; the start of every TSLP season is just so exciting.”

-Richard Crowell, Executive Director

Additionally, 6 girls from the West Humber Girls Leadership Program will also be joining the TSLP this year to continue their training. After successfully completing the Girls program in June of 2022, they went on to volunteer at various Philpott Summer camps over the GTA to gain experience. With the start of this new season, they will all be returning to continue developing their skills and become certified instructors.

We are so excited for what this new season of tennis has to bring. With a new group of participants every year, we are continuing to grow and help more youth in the community get the training they deserve.
