The Toronto Lawn Tennis club is proud to announce that the 35th annual Philpott Ladies Invitational Tournament in support of Philpott Children’s Tennis was a huge success! This two-day tournament and gala, held January 23th and 24th, 2019 was attended by over 300 tennis enthusiasts and Philpott supporters.
With Simon Bartram, Tennis Director at The Toronto Lawn and Tennis Club, as host of the Gala themed “The Tennis Ball”, this event raised over $40,000 for Toronto’s priority needs children. This is huge for the charity and ultimately for the children… (read to the end to find our big reveal!) A big thank you goes out to the hard work of The Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, the Head Pros and staff, and the Philpott Ladies Invitational committee. The committee consisted of Jennifer Scace, Alison Thompson, Heather McCallum and Martha Weeman.
This year there were 10 divisions of competition, with four teams per division for a total of 40 teams. Thank you to the following clubs for providing court time for the tournament: The Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, The Granite Club, The Cricket Club, Lambton Golf and Country Club, The Badminton and Racquet Club, The Boulevard Club, York Racquets, The Bayview Golf and Country Club, and The Donalda Club. The rivalry was fierce but fun, because at the end of the day everyone realized they were part of something much bigger than a two-day tennis tournament. They were providing opportunities for children to play tennis in priority needs areas of the city. The gala on the second day was a time to meet and greet opponents and friends, enjoy a delicious dinner and bid on some fabulous silent auction items.
The 2019 Philpott Ladies Invitational tournament will provide a significant portion of the annual funding for the Philpott charity. With the proceeds from this event, we are proud to announce that for the first time in Philpott Children’s Tennis history, we have expanded from a single camp site in 1991 to providing free tennis programs to children in prioritized neighborhoods all year long! More children will have access to court times and given the opportunity to learn the wonderful sport of tennis. Almost half of our instructors first learned their tennis through the Philpott lessons and are now certified and teaching in neighbourhoods where they grew up. Their mentorship is invaluable. This is a huge step for our foundation, and it is all thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners. Philpott Children’s Tennis is constantly growing and is determined to continue expanding. Many changes are underway to truly making this one of the best and successful years Philpott can have!
The Philpott Board of Directors, the instructors, the volunteers and the children say thank you for giving back to the sport you love through your participation in the 35th Philpott Ladies Invitational tournament!
